Little Opera of the North

Little Opera of the North is a program from Lyric Opera of the North that brings professional opera to elementary school students throughout Northern Minnesota.

Four professional singers, one pianist, a set, costumes and props arrive at the school, set up, and rehearse with their opera chorus — 16 students from the school! Then the LOON cast and their student chorus perform for the rest of the school, along with invited guests.

2020-21 Production: COVID-Friendly Virtual Program

Since live opera in school gyms wasn’t possible this year, Lyric Opera of the North wrote and produced a virtual Little LOON show! The 18-minute Little LOON and Friends video is overflowing with beautiful singing and heartfelt moments, with plenty of learning opportunities and silliness sprinkled in.

Both distance and in-person students throughout the Arrowhead Region are participating in this year’s virtual “tour.” We are thrilled to invite YOU, our patrons, to enjoy Little LOON and Friends too! For an extra bit of fun, print your very own Seek and Find and Sing Along Sheet Music before viewing. Be sure to watch until the very end so you don’t miss the fun moments in the credits, and please share with friends of all ages! This video was created with a lot of support from patrons like you.

LOON was able to offer Little LOON & Friends to schools for a suggested donation of $50. Schools received the video whether they could pay or not! The project was made possible through the generosity of individual patrons, as well as the Cecilian Society, Arrowhead Regional Arts Council, and the State Arts Board.

If bringing opera to young audiences is something you’d like to support, you can designate Little LOON in your next donation to Lyric Opera of the North! Next year, we hope to be back in school gyms! Thank you!!!

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
